History of Selby
Selby is a bustling market town, situated in the heart of Yorkshire. Conveniently situated near to the A1 and M62, and close to Leeds and York, Selby and the surrounding area offers something for everyone.
The central attraction has to be the 11th century Selby Abbey, birthplace of Henry I. Its features include Norman arches, the Washington window and the Cholera Burial Ground. For those interested in history, Cawood Castle, where Cardinal Thomas Wolsey was arrested, is nearby, as is the village of Towton. This was the scene of England's bloodiest battle in 1461 between the Yorkists and the Lancastrians.
Selby also offers ample opportunity for shopping, with an open air market every Monday and Saturday, as well as regular livestock and farmers' markets. Bank Holiday markets are always popular with tourists and locals alike.
The scenic setting of the Vale of York makes Selby and the local area ideal for people wishing to explore. Disused railway lines and river footpaths and cycleways are flat and easy ways to discover the Selby district by foot or bicycle. The Transpennine Trail also passes through Selby. For those with cars, there are many small, picturesque villages in the area, with friendly and welcoming country pubs. Local country halls also run events throughout the year.
